clay ground series

Since a few years I've been painting with watercolor on prepared clay surface, which are mostly prepared by me in my studio, though sometimes I use store bought panels as well. This archival surface is more smooth compared to watercolor paper and allows for vibrant colors and more subtle layering. The paintings on home prepared surface contain an element of experimentation, since each newly prepared surface reacts slightly different to pigment and water, which makes the painting process less controllable. Subsequently, this slight unpredictability has become an essential element in the paintings, which also adds to the subject's expression.
